it seems the setting for Default Value on UI-only Fields does not work
Whatever value i set there, field always shows blank

Is your record existing or new?
There are a few other threads about this…default value is only applied to new records. Definitely not ideal for most use cases, but its by design (at least currently).
Record is existing, so your answer explains my issue.
And i did search forum for existing threads about this but could not find any.
