Build your own skuid HL7 service adapter?

I find myself in the position to need to integrate with HL7… to send SFDC data as HL7 files, and parse HL7 files into SFDC data. If I understand that correctly, that is the work that a service adapter does, correct?

It looks like we can build our own service adapters in skuid. Is that the case? Is that what I would have to do to integrate?

Does anyone have experience with HL7?
