I am struggling to set up my instance of Nintex Process Manager to only allow roles as the owner / expert, and not an individual user (trying to future proof to make it easier to manage when someone is promoted / resigns etc.).  Is there a setting where one can set it to only allow roles and no individual users (names) as experts / owners?

 

Hello ​@EstherP - Currently only users can be set-up as for Process Owners/Experts. There is a relevant idea here if you would like to vote for it (Process Owner and Expert | Nintex Ideas).

Outside of the above have you been using the Transfer Ownership feature when someone leaves the company? You can pick and choose what gets transferred to other users before removing the profile of the departed user.
