Active Directory Distribution Groups Unavailable in People Picker

ISSUE
When using the People Picker to select a To or CC value in a workflow, Active Directory Distribution Groups do not appear in the list of available recipients.
ERROR CODE
RESOLUTION
This is by design. Distribution Lists (as they are defined in Active Directory), are not compatible with SharePoint. For more information, see Overview of security groups in SharePoint 2013 in Microsoft TechNet.
