What happens if the iOS Distribution Certificate expires for an App Studio app?

A new certificate will need to be generated.
Once the new certificate is added to App Studio the app will need to be built again in App Studio and distributed.
When the users installs the app it will overwrite the old app and there will be no data loss or any need to re-configure.
