SMTP to use SmartAction - The action is not being processed after the user replied the action through email

Hi everyone. Is it compulsory to use EWS to interact with SmartAction? Because my company uses SMTP instead.

For security reasons Exchange is the only supported SmartActions path.  I believe the reason is that Exchange / Outlook adds a header that can be trusted to identify the user.
