Access K2 Blackpearl categories

I am trying to automate some of the administrative tasks for k2.  I am try to create a form with the tree control that is tied to the categories tree.  I want to user to be able to select a category or smart object and copy it to a specific area.  I want the workflow to handle this as the users wont have the rights.  How do i connect the tree control to the category tree?
