We are nearing the release date of the next Nintex K2 Five release, version 5.5. As always, customers can upgrade from any prior supported version to this latest release.  In order to continually innovate and bring new and exciting features to K2 Software, we must say goodbye to some old components. In K2 Five 5.5, there are several components that have been blocked or removed. If you must remain on one of the deprecated technologies, do not upgrade to K2 Five (5.5) and instead remain on an older version.

Deprecated Functionality and components

In order to continually innovate and bring new and exciting features to K2 Software, we must say goodbye to some old components. In K2 Five 5.5, there are several components that have been blocked or removed. If you must remain on one of the deprecated technologies, do not upgrade to K2 Five (5.5) and instead remain on an older version. Make a plan to remove your dependency on deprecated technologies as soon as possible, so you can upgrade and take advantage of the new features.

Let’s look at them and how they may impact your upgrade.

InfoPath Integration

Microsoft InfoPath has reached its end of mainstream support. While support for InfoPath was removed in K2 Five 5.0, some legacy components remained installed. With 5.5, these components have been removed. Any legacy workflows built in K2 Studio or K2 for Visual Studio using InfoPath wizards will receive an error. Be sure to rebuild any affected workflows in the latest K2 workflow designer. Use SmartForms as your workflow integrated forms.

Internet Explorer 11

As of the 5.5 release, we will no longer include Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on our list of supported browsers. You will be unable to open K2 tools using IE11 once you upgrade to 5.5. This applies to all design-time tools we provide as well as the end user runtime experiences, such as Management or Workspace.

Silverlight-based Workflows

Hand in hand with IE11, the Silverlight-based workflow designer will no longer be supported. Accessing the Silverlight-based workflow requires a browser that supported the Silverlight plug-in, which is only IE11. Therefore, when 5.5 blocks IE11 from use, the Silverlight-based designer will also no longer be available.

If you must continue to use IE11 or edit your workflows using the Silverlight-based designer, you must remain on Nintex K2 Five (5.4).

Need to know how many Silverlight workflows you have still being used? We are always looking for ways to innovate and in order to do that, we must leave technologies we’ve outgrown behind. While it’s always hard to say goodbye to older technologies, we hope that the new features and enhancements in K2 Five 5.5 make it easier to leave deprecated technologies.
