Why does converting a document from Word to PDF take 10-15 minutes?

I have a workflow that has one action to take a word document in a document library and convert it into a PDF.  The workflow performs just as I would like, but the time it takes is way too long (about 10-15 minutes).

Is there a reason behind why this is happening and is there something I can do to make the workflow run faster?
