Redirection

Hi Folks,
We have a requirement where the current person involved in the workflow can defer his worklist item for 'n' days. This would trigger an email to the concerned person that their worklist items have been deferred.
I have done this by finishing the current activity that the owner is in and looping back to the same activity when deferment is chosen. But this has, and quite likely, changed the 'link' that was available to the person after deferment.
My question is , can I keep the worklist item link the same and do deferment? A simple deferment could have been achieved by using sleep. But for the emailing part, I need to 'finish' the current activity so that the server event of emailing also gets trigerred. And this would in turn change the link.
