Notifications inside State machine stopped working

I have a workflow with a State Machine (Nintex WF2013 on premises) which initially behaved as expected, but all of a sudden stopped sending e-mail notifications within the State Machine branches.

The rest of the actions in the state machine continue to work, i.e. any actions defined after sending the notifications are executed. Even the e-mail notification action itself is displayed as "green" in the visual workflow history. I verified that e-mail notifications in other workflows on the same site continue to work as expected.

The list contains only a few dozen items currently and the workflow history list also has only a few dozen entries, so I should be no where near any performance limits.

Deactivating the Nintex feature on the site and immediately re-activating it fixed the problem a few times, but then it randomly stopped working again. Now even this does not solve the issue. I am only a site collection administrator, i.e. cannot reboot any services.

Is there anything I can try to do before taking it to the infrastructure team?

For this one, you may have to get the infrastructure team to check the logs to see what may be happening with the email events during that particular time.

Alternatively, you could do one of two things...

  1. export the workflow and reimport it to see if for some reason the workflow became corrupt
  2. drag new send notification actions onto the workflow, reconfigure and then republish it

Both aren't ideal but if everything else is working and other email notifications are also working in other workflows, there must be something isolated to this one workflow that is causing it to not operate correctly. Typically if it were directly with Nintex as a software, it would be a more widespread issue you would be encountering.

Hope that helps.
