More Information About Execution Timeout Expired Error

An error I don't recall ever seeing before came up in two workflow error messages within 3 minutes of each other. Here's one of them:

The errors occurred on list items in two different site collections.

Can anyone provide more information on this error, what may have caused it, how it might be prevented in the future?

Was one of the servers having issues in those few minutes?

That was my first thought, but our system administrators did not pick up on any server issues. Their advice was "check with Nintex".
