I would like to populate a value in the task list after the flexi task is assigned, but before approval or rejection. Is there a way to accomplish this?

I would like to populate a value in the task list after the flexi task is assigned, but before approval or rejection. Is there a way to accomplish this? The workflow designer does not allow for any action to be inserted before the approve or rejection step.
