Resolution
One option is to expose AD user details with additional properties via Web Service, and bring them into K2 via one of the Endpoints services.
There is a third-party broker available on the K2 Market which can return custom AD properties: http://community.k2.com/t5/K2-blackpearl/Dynamic-Active-Directory-Service/ba-p/869
