Grant permissions to delegate on the fly?

I've discovered that if someone delegates an approval task for an item, the delegate must have permission to read the item. We often limit all permissions on an item to the submitter and the intended approver. Since there doesn't appear to be a way to automatically grant permissions to the delegate, does anyone have a workaround for this problem? It seems like it would be a fairly common need. Thanks!

As delegating changes the Assignee/Assigned To field, wouldn't it be possible to trigger a workflow on the changed task based on this field which updates the related item's permissions?

there is an 'Item permissions' section at the bottom of task configuration dialog, just for this purpose

Ugh! I've seen that a hundred times before and completely glossed over it in the clutch. Thanks so much, Marian!
