Microsoft announced in 2023 that SharePoint 2013 workflows will be deprecated in Microsoft 365. This deprecation affects Nintex Workflows in SharePoint Online which utilizes the SharePoint 2013 workflow engine.

Microsoft subsequently announced the retirement of SharePoint Add-Ins in late 2023. This retirement affects Nintex Forms in SharePoint Online which utilizes the SharePoint Add-Ins.

The key timelines announced by Microsoft are as follows:

2 Apr 2024 – New SharePoint Online tenants will no longer have access to SharePoint 2013 workflow engine

1 Nov 2024 – SharePoint Add-Ins will no longer work for new SharePoint Online tenants

31 Dec 2025 – Nintex End of Life Product Announcement for Nintex for O365

2 Apr 2026 – SharePoint 2013 workflow engine will be removed from all existing SharePoint Online tenants

2 Apr 2026 – SharePoint Add-Ins will be retired from all existing SharePoint Online tenants

What does it mean for Nintex Customers?

New customers

  • Nintex Workflows

New customers who are signing up for Nintex Workflows from 2 Apr 2024 will need to utilize Nintex Automation Cloud to fulfill the automation needs. There is no longer an option to create and operate workflows from SharePoint Online.

  • Nintex Forms

New customers who are requiring Nintex Forms from 1 Nov 2024, Nintex has rolled out the new Nintex Automation Cloud SPFx app in SharePoint Online. This new app is developed based on Microsoft’s SharePoint Framework and will not be impacted by the SharePoint Add-Ins retirement.

Existing customers

  • Nintex Workflows

Existing customers who already have the Nintex Workflow application in SharePoint Online prior to 2 Apr 2024 can continue to use the Nintex Workflow app until 1 Apr 2026. This includes creating new workflows, modifying existing workflows and operating workflows. These workflows will stop working entirely from 2 Apr 2026 and there will not be any recourse or workaround. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that workflows are upgraded to Nintex Automation Cloud to cushion any impact and prevent any operational downtime before the deadline. To help our customers with this transition, Nintex offers the Nintex Upgrade Program which provides migration tooling without costs, dedicated migration services and support to help with your workflow migration to Nintex Automation Cloud. If you have not been engaged and would like to learn more, you can read more from the Program Overview page. Alternatively, you can reach out to your Nintex Account Manager to gather more details and commence discussions on the Upgrade Program.

  • Nintex Forms

Existing customers who are already using Nintex Forms application in SharePoint Online prior to 1 Nov 2024 can continue to use the Nintex Forms app until 1 Apr 2026. This includes creating new forms, modifying existing forms and publishing forms. However, these forms will stop working entirely from 2 Apr 2026 and there will not be any recourse or workaround. To avoid any impact or downtime due to the retirement, all Nintex forms in legacy formats (i.e. classic and old responsive formats) must be upgraded to the new responsive format. This can be achieved by the forms upgrade tool that is now available and accessible through your forms designer. If any forms are identified to be in legacy formats, a message will be displayed in the forms designer when you open the form which provides you with a link to start upgrading your form. Once all forms are upgraded to new responsive formats, you will now need to install the SPFx app from the SharePoint Online store and republish all your forms again.

Prior to installing the app, do ensure you have the following:

  1. At least 1 existing active Nintex Automation Cloud tenant

  1. A valid license for the SPFx app. Please check with your Account Manager if you are unsure.
