o365 sharepoint currency field outputs in html as unformatted from workflow

Hi

I have a currency column in sharepoint. During workflow i place this value into html which I use in an email notification. It displays in the email with no dollar sign and no commas. 

e.g. I expect $1,345.67 and get 1345.67

Why is the formatting missing?
