There are numerous barcode fonts that will work, such as Free Barcode Font - Code 39, from Barcodes Inc. In the template put the tag in the barcode font.

Ensure that the "Embed Fonts in the File" is checked in Microsoft Word:
File>>Options>>Save>>Check "Embed Fonts in the File"
