Yes - you can use blackpearl for just its workflow components and use something other than SharePoint as a user interface to start/integrate with workflow processes.

Yes you can! In fact, I would say it has been more common in the past few years for customers to only use SharePoint as a document repository and save data in a SQL database. You can build very rich applications with K2 and SQL with no code.
Also, you might also look at using the latest version of the product K2 Five.
