I have png logos, they have transparent backgrounds, I upload them with the file component to an account then reference them via a URL on the image component. They come up fine, for internal users, for partner community, and for public site users. But they all have a white background!

Is this a known flaw with the image component? or do I have to do something to make the transparency work?

I display transparent png’s in the image component. Works fine. Mine are stored in static resources though

Nevermind! I was trying to use the standard salesforce view for an Account and the Files related list to update the custom photo__c field on an Account, but that doesn’t really work. Turns out I had old values in the photo__c field. Transparency working great. Nothing to see here.
