On Premise Workflow using reminders and delegates

I am building a workflow that uses a state machine and a half dozen flexi tasks.  When one of the tasks is sent for actioning, I added reminders that work fine.  But, I need to be able to either cancel or redirect after the task action exceeds some maximum limit.

I tried on the escalation tab, complete the task after some time limit or to delegate.  Neither does what I need. The complete path has the next flexi task called which is no good as the preconditions that the previous flexi task were to handle obviously did not get handled.  The delegate task pass the same flexi task to the next flexi task recipient to answer questions that only the missed actioner could answer.  Also, I see that there is an Outcome I can set that I thought would jump to another branch on my state machine but did nothing.

Any help on this would be appreciated.
