Q: What would be the best ways to copy a document to:
1. Another list or library in the current site
2. A list or library in another site in the same Site Collection
3. A list or library in a different Site Collection
4. list or library in a different farm
Another list or library in the current site
You could use the Copy Item in this case as it works within a site. It supports only lists. Or Copy to SharePoint for libraries.
A list or library in another site in the same Site Collection
Copy to SharePoint for libraries. To 'copy' a list item outside the current site, you would need to use the Call Web Service action to create a list item in the target list by calling lists.asmx. See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/lists.lists.updatelistitems.aspx for more information.
A list or library in a different Site Collection
A list or library in a different farm
You can use Lists.asmx across a farm, but that only support list items. Copy To SharePoint does not work across a farm (this is because it uses the SharePoint Object Model API which is farm specific).
Using the "Open with Explorer" option in the Library tab of SharePoint has been a great tool for us when moving/copying items between lists and libraries. (It is also useful when you need to send a large number of files.) However, to obtain a successful copy, you must make sure the previously indexed fields are available in the new location. I have made that mistake .
I agree! The explorer functionality is great. The above post was intended for automated copying/moving, as part of a wider workflow solution. Depending on where the content needs to be moved, different functionalities are used. Oh yes, the metadata is a funny one! SharePoint does like to fall over, if the target area doesn't match! Hopefully it helps
Is it possible to copy/create an item in a target list based on data in a Form Library's column when they are in different site collections/web apps?
Source: Form Library with select promoted SharePoint columns in Site Collection A, Web Application 1
Target: List in Site Collection B, Web Application 2
If so, how. If not, what alternatives could be possible?
