Posting Code and Getting Emoticons

Jump to solution

Hi @eharris04 ,

I wanted to take a momment and make a suggestion. I noticed when using the code window in forum posts, sometimes, character combinations create emoticons that translate out to long text for the emoticon when the code is coppied and pasted in a solution. If caught, not a big deal if you know the keyboard combinations for emoticons but with larger blocks of code, it can be a challenge to sort out if you do not know what you are looking for.  Is there a way you can have emoticons turned off in the code window?

An example is where the following is used (lets see if it actually happens in this test instance)...

(function(formControlCall, isHidden) {
some code
}("{Control:Self}", AccountAssignment !== "F")

Then when coppied and pasted, the offending characters show up as...

}("{ControlSmiley Frustratedelf}", AccountAssignment !== "F")

I got the above example from a code window in the following post:

Repeating Section Rows Resizing With Hidden Controls

Thanks for all you do for us!

Best Regards,

Patrick

Hi @jpmhuls ,

Thanks for the reply! I am not a great coder in any language so I am not sure I understand. How does that feature help inddicate bad code?

Thanks and regards,

Patrick

Hi @kelliganp,

Apologies for confusing you, but my remark was meant to be funny, not serious. Hence my twinky smiley.... But you do have a valid point that it is at least annoying to see some of the pasted code/text being converted in a smiley.

I brought this problem up when we switched over to the new forums, and it's kinda a shame that it's *still* happening... I'm happy that they updated the look of these things, but the usability is still nowhere near as useful as the older forums unfortunately.

To *fix* this problem, do the following.

  1. Go to your profile Settings:
     image.png

  2. Using the Top Tabs, go to Preferences -> Display, and then set the Emoticon Type to NONE:
    image.png
  3. Do not forget to SAVE your changes using the button at the bottom of the screen

It should be noted that this *fix* will only work for YOU! Anyone who hasn't gone through these steps will still see code rendered incorrectly making copying and pasting practically useless! yay!

Hope this helps.

It would really be nice to have this fixed, and to regain a few of the older options of the last forum like Code Formatting types, so things like JavaScript are color coded differently from HTML.

The formatting would be an excellent update!

Thanks again and Best Regards,
