Does the Duration of a sub workflow count towards the duration of the calling workflow?

Im trying to break a long workflow into a few parts to help not reach the max process duration limit.

Have anyone done this? or similar?

Thanks

Barry

Re: Does the Duration of a sub workflow count towards the duration of the calling workflow?

Barry,

Thanks for your question.  I took the liberty to answer your question via the first Nintex Hangout this year.  See the video below. It should be set to start at 31:21. Nintex Hangout live with Eric Harris (Jan 6th) - YouTube

Essentially, the workflows are not connected in some extent.  If you have the sub workflow creating or updating items that are called back into the main workflow then the duration would be affected.  If you are just kicking off a sub workflow that has no affect on the main workflow, then the duration is not related.  Even if the workflows are working on the same item, the workflow duration themselves are not connected or related.

Hi Barry,

this depends on how you start the workflow:

  • if you use a web service call, the first workflow will continue after the second is started (it does not wait for the second to finish)
  • if you use the start workflow action, you can select the wait for the workflow to complete before continuing option, in this case the first workflow will not resume until the second workflow is finished
    • if not selected, the workflowe behaves as if started using a web service call

Hope this helps!
