Should we be able to render lookup fields as a picklist instead of an auto-complete field?

Should we be able to change whether the field label displays above the field vs beside the field?

Being able to render a lookup field as a picklist instead of an auto-complete field is something I use extensively as well. I am also wondering if this is possible in API v2 - has anyone worked out how to do this yet?
