Update Workflow App In Office 365 On Site With Running Workflows

I have a site which has an older version of the Workflow app, and I would like to update the app so that I can use the new responsive designer for task forms in a workflow I'm currently building. This site already has a list and a workflow, with multiple workflows in progress, and it's unlikely there will be a time when there aren't any workflows running on that list.

Will updating the Workflow app - which in the past has always required me to remove the app and then re-add it - impact any of these running workflows, and if so, how can I work around this? Also, are there any other concerns I should be aware of? Previously I've only updated the app on new sites which haven't had workflows running.

Removing and re-adding the app will not cause a problem for running workflows. The app is mainly for the designer. Once a workflow is created and running its in the hands of SharePoints Workflow Manager.
