I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be possible with OOB features. From the community article linked, it looks to be mainly a Form with tabs, each with a different type of view on them, from an Item view displaying data to a worklist control on a view to allow access of User Tasks. 

My recommendation would be to try building something similar using the OOB tools and features and see if you're able to create a menu system that is able to interact and provide the user with all information they would require.
