Symptoms

To allow for continued support, customer is in beginning stages of planning to upgrade to Server 2012r2 and SQL Server 2012. Their planning team has asked for documentation, best practice or details on how to best accomplish the upgrade. They do not do in place o/s upgrades. This requires building new servers and migrating the data. Their concern is getting the data ported over to the new server. For the application server, customer was not sure if there was a way to maintain the configuration settings so they do not have to reconfigure during the install. Any information and documentation would be appreciated. The Help documentation did not cover this scenario.
