If your document upload returns a link to item once the updoad is complete, you could potentially use the form rule to open a new browser window (modal) to the edit page of the uploaded document. I don't have a SharePoint instance infront of me at the moment so I haven't been able to test that idea out, but it was my first thought of an out of the box means of achieiving your goal.
