When looking to upgrade the SAP component in your production environment this weekend and you have been alerted to stop K2 smartactions approvals sent by email while the upgrade goes on. You will have to stop the K2 service along with the message Queuing ?

Why is this the case?
 

Resolution

In short the message queuing service is used as a messaging protocol that allows applications running on their own servers to communicate in a filesafe manner. So in this I believe it could be tied to the exchange server however with smart actions I know this relies heavily with the exchange server here.

You may be able to perform tests however, sending mails may not work here. I believe it would be best to do this on a dev server firstly before touching production. If an email gets stuck here then you would need to refresh the queues and see if you are able to get the emails after a few minutes.
