I have encountered the following problem when trying to install K2 Blackpearl on a clean server 2008 r2 VM. I was setting up a distributed environment for training purposes. The K2 version and installer crash were as follows:

Ensure that the following role has been added before running the k2 installer:

Yes that is correct. As per the documentation.
This is needed for the Setup manager to actually run. As you would have noticed, it will crash without even creating K2 install logs if you dont have .Net 3.5 installed.
