How to resolve Document Set workflow error "workflow has ended unexpectedly"

I originally had the workflow for my document set library to automatically start when a NEW document set is created. However, you can't upload the documents until after the NEW document set is created...thus causing this error message to appear in my inbox....therefore, I changed my method to only allow the workflow to start manually. Is there a workaround to this? Or do all document set libraries workflow require a manual initiation? My workflow is set at the document set level. Any assistance provided would greatly be provided. Thank you.
