Sounds like the app server cannot find the project file or front end cannot find the app server - we have had this in the past when server connections go down (and makes sense if production and dev environs are on different servers). Furthermore it may be worth checking that the service accounts in this environment still have access rights to the relevant servers or mapped drives if the k2 project file is not held on the server.
