I'm new to K2 and looking for documentation on how to create K2 SmartObject for SQL database instance with SharePoint 2013.
All the reference material I have found are to do with K2 for SharePoint 2010 only.

Hi,
If you mean creating a SmartObject from a SQL database, look at Lab 1 of http://help.k2.com/displaycontent.aspx?id=4512.
If you mean creating a SmartObject from a SharePoint 2013 Library or list, then you will need K2 for SharePoint app. See http://help.k2.com/helppages/K2ForSharePointUserGuide1.0/default.htm#Creating-a-SmartObject-from-a-SharePoint_list-or-library.htm%3FTocPath%3DBuild%7CData%7CGenerating%20SmartObjects%7C_____1
