Resolution

Configured to pipe http traffic from k2 service to fiddler tool. Found the 404 error when accessing the following url "http://sharepointsite/_api/Web/lists/getbyid('6e54bba2-da4f-4204-80e4-ec75c08f4644')/items(103)". The error message "{"error":{"code":"-2130575338, Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException","message":{"lang":"en-US","value":"There is no file with URL '_catalogs/wp/K2FormViewer.webpart' in this Web."}}}".

Navigated to the sharepoint site web part gallery and found that item 103 is the K2FormViewer.webpart. Navigated to the sharepoint web part gallery and remove the K2FormViewer.webpart (all K2 related webpart, these are for sharepoint 2010). Then ran the k2 registration on the k2 for sharepoint app and activate it on the sharepoint site successfully. After customer is able to generate smartobject from sharepoint list/library.
