We are interested in using Nintex in our environment, but the business is not liking the cost. Is there an alternative/better cost when using workflow cloud? Can it be used with an on-prem environment that is not externally facing?

Can we connect to better understand what you are looking for and "why the business is not liking the cost". Nintex is relatively inexpensive compared to other similar solutions and the ROI can be 10x to 20x the cost easily.

Just to answer the question - Nintex Workflow Cloud does not connect to SharePoint on-premises. To leverage the power of Nintex with your SharePoint on premises, you will need to use the on-premises version of Nintex.
