On the SmartForm are you by any chance trying to use a List or Item view to achieve this? 

More information on the SmartForm will give me a better idea on possible ways to achieve this.

I am still gathering requirements, so I'm not sure yet if it will be a List or Item view, but it will be one of the two.

You could use both... An item view to add an individual new record (lets's say it was for a new contract), and an editable list view to add the details of the contractors (for the new contract), all this can be done on one Form - with multiple views. That is if my understanding of this is correct.
