I know this is a bit late, but just in case someone else runs into this in the future, could you specify what type of field you are trying to use? Some more details on exactly what you were/are trying to do would help. It may depend if you're trying to use asp.net vs SmartForms, etc. Could you also clarify why you don't want to use the SP client wizard as well?
