Connected to fields

I'm using the "Connected to" feature available on buttons to set a value in a specific field when the button is clicked. I'm finding this to be inconsistent, sometimes it just doesn't work at all and sometimes it does. I think it's something to do with fields being connected to SharePoint fields or not but I can't seem to work it out. Is there any advice or guidance on this?

 

The reason i'm using it to update fields is too trigger actions in a workflow using the "Wait for item update" action. Also i'm using Nintex for SharePoint 2013.

Is the same field you're updating with the button on the form?  there may be some conflict?

we do this all the time to update a status column, but we never actually have that field on the form if that makes sense - we then use starting conditions on workflows to start based on the status the button has set.

This actually seems to have helped by creating the column but not actually placing it on the form so thank you! This seems to be the solution I needed :)
