I would like to use xml data or a smartobject as my data source for my destination set users.

Using Plan per slot (no destinations), to loop through XML repeating node or a set of data result returned from SmartObject call per this KB, http://help.k2.com/kb000685 resolved this issue. See attached sampleloopingsmartobject.docx for an example.
