I have a web service that I call frequently from many workflows to retrieve approver information from a ERP. It would be convenient to be able to use the SmartObject interface to achieve this rather than a reference event.
Is it possible to create a custom SmartObject for K2 BlackPoint 4.5.

This would be totally do-able in K2 blackpearl. You could either write your own custom service object that can be used by Smart Objects, or you could use this open source project on the blackmarket to dynamically map a web service to a smart object:

I don't think you will be able to use the above custom service type in blackpoint, so if this is a big business requirement for you I would start looking at upgrading to blackpearl.
