Retrieve Workflow Task ID at end of Approval URL string

I've read through many a forum thread and I have yet to find an answer to this that doesn't involve some convoluted method to achieve.  Here's an example Approval URL:

http://farmname/sites/dsmre/sme90/Lists/Workflow%20Tasks/EditForm.aspx?ID=2659

If anyone can instruct me on how to retrieve that unique identifier at the end of the URL (2659 in the example), I would really appreciate it!

NOTE:  I'm aware that these URL's can be inserted into task notification/reminder/escalation emails through the task's configuration tabs.  However, my users' specifications for email notifications are not achievable through the task configuration--it's not granular enough.

I am sorry to hear that the references do not suit your needs as this is the only non convoluted way to get the task ID before the task has been completed.
