Users recently noticed that the status of previously completed workflows disappeared. This drastically effects their reporting on list items. All the workflow history on the items are there but the workflow status is not. 

 

So for example if the status is "In Progress", Cancelled" or "Completed" that information is now gone. Any ideas as to why this would happen? Where to look or anything.

I'd say that the SharePoint history has been cleaned up by the 60 day cleanup job and the Nintex Workflow history has remained.

Is it possible to change the 60day cleanup to unlimited and if yes where can I do it ? Thank you.

It is a timer service job that does the clean up. Its called "Workflow Auto Cleanup". The job can be disabled. If you do disable this job make sure the SharePoint History list does not exceed 5000 items or you will start to run into problems.

SharePoint is not meant to be used as storage so if records need to be kept for years for auditing etc then a suitable application should be found.
