You can find more information regarding minimum permissions in Office 365 in this blog post :

This is super useful! Thanks

I'm glad that this blog post can help

Thanks Caroline,

Great Summary!

When a list has items with with "Item level" permissions, a user should have at least contribute on the list item to start the workflow on that item...right?

Exactly

Could the article be updated with more details ? It is not true that we need the Contribute permissions level to start a workflow, what we need is this or that permission itself. I have been able to start workflow with a custom permissions level, so the issue is not the permission levels, but the permissions themselves (Add Items, View Items, Browse Directories, etc.)
Thanks

Hi,

What are the permissions required at the site colllection level?

Thanks,

Rob
