Unable to deploy workflow from K2 Studio or P&D after K2 5.1 upgrade

After upgrading to K2 5.1 from K2 4.7, K2 Studio workflows are not deployable. An error is raised when deployment is done from K2 Studio as well as when deployment is done from Package and Deployment:
“SmartObject Server Exception: Execution Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.. SmartObject: [Process Process Instances]”Symptoms
Deployment of any workflow raises the time-out error. This can also be tested by creating a new simple workflow and replicating the same behaviour making any deployment from K2 Studio end in failure. This is also occurs for deployment from P&D where deployment fails with a time-out error.
