Smartobject is empty error when running Workflow

Smartobject Name: Transfer Record SmartobjectEvent
Method: Read
Input: ItemID (text), UserID (text), Acceptedby (text)
Return: String (Text)
I've mapped all these fields in my Workflow with datafields and have checked that the input items all are populated (using an email event to display the fields), but it still fails with "Smartobject is empty"...
Workspace says "Smartobject is Empty", but I can't understand why there is an error, I seem to have everything in correctly.
Resolution
The issue was resolved by using the 'List' method instead of the 'Read' method.
