Most customers have production and staging environment.
Sometimes, teams backup/restore production to staging. In this case, running workflows continue to run on staging, causing confusion.
I have exactly the same issue with replicated farms.
The only solution I have experience is to set a wrong smtp server to deactivate notiications.
