Could someone explain to me the concept of an Action ID? I wasn't able to find much about it in the documentation.
TLDR: Use it to manage tasks that are created within your workflow.
After writing the below, I found that I basically explained section 1.35 Delegate Workflow Task, in the 2013 Workflow Help file. For download go here Nintex Workflow Help File Excerpts (look here for user guide content)
From the help document it reads:
Allows a unique identifier for the action to be stored in an Action ID workflow variable. This identifier can be used to link the action to Delegate Task and Task reminder actions. Please note that the Action ID does not correspond to the ID of the SharePoint task item that is created.
Typically you would use the Action ID when communicating with open tasks. For example,
Thank you that is very clear!
Can you tell me why the Action ID is not available in Request Review and Flexi Task?
Great question. It is available in Request Review, but not the Flexi Task. The Store Action ID option was not put into the Flexi Task because this functionality of Delegation(escalation) and Task Reminders was built into the action.
I would suggest adding it to FlexiTasks. The need to delegate a workflow task to somebody else may arise after the FlexiTask has started, and may be part of a separate workflow. I'm dealing with that situation right now, and ended up here while researching just what is an "Action ID" because that's what the "Delegate Task" action needs.
Hi Andrew Glasser
I think you've described exactly what I need to do... I have to enhance a workflow that was created by someone else in a way that I wouldn't do things, but it is what it is and I just need to try to muddle through. There are a lot of request review tasks and I have been asked to send reminders on these tasks every 3 days forever until they are responded to.
Am I correct in thinking that I would add a parallel action before the request review task, drag the request review to one of the branches and in the other branch pause for three days to send reminder for the action ID I have saved in the request review?
If so, how do I send another reminder 3 more days on? How do I ensure those three days are business days? And what if the request review action is responded to before the three days - will the parallel action wait for the three days and send a reminder anyway?
Sorry for all the questions on such an old thread...
Thanks in advance.
Well Cassy, there may be a different approach that could fit all of those requirements. What if you left the workflow as is but created a supporting Site Workflow.
