I'm looking into Nintex forms as a way of gathering data for configuration management. If a form I create is filled out, in what form will I get the results? ie. Will it be in XML/CSV/JSON other??
So essentially you want to use Sharepoint / Nintex Forms to capture the data that can then get piped off to a different system for processing ? I've built similar systems just in Sharepoint but that all I had
I'm assuming you have Nintex Workflow as well, so there is 2 ways you can skin this cat..
Collect your data in a Nintex Form/Sharepoint List and then use Nintex Workflow to pump out the data to a Web Service / SQL etc
Collect all the data, and use oData / REST to connect directly to the Sharepoint List as the data source.
Hey Rob, the data is stored into the SharePoint list. So I get it all depends on what you want to do with the results once you have them.. YOu could grab them from the sharepoint list via REST or SOAP you could link an excel file to the list and pull in the data like CSV.. YOu can also connect to the list as a datasource in SSRS.. OR you could use workflow to pump out the data to where it needs to go .. You could build a CSV file of the info potentially, pop it into an email or post it to a web service or SQL.. up to you.
I also neglected to state that if the fields aren't bound to a Sharepoint list field you can use XML to retrieve the data via Workflow. http://www.sharepointpub.com/nintex-dawn-of-the-unbound-data-column/
Ok, that's interesting, thanks. Would you be able to recommend a good resource to better understand these options and how to configure them in the Nintex form?
Hey Rob, what are you trying to achieve ? Are you looking to populate Nintex Forms with Data ? or push it out to a different system. Think of Nintex Forms as a ASP.NET form and the data is stored in Sharepoint. SO essentially you don't really do anything in Nintex Form of any of the above they are either OOTB SharePoint, SSRS features or something you would do with Workflow. If you can explain exactly what you trying to do and trying to integrate with, the brains truist on here should be able to give some guidance
Basically I'm trying to build a configuration management workflow. I have device templates, currently built in Jinja2, that are populated with data from either csv/yaml/json/xml files, using either Python or Ansible.
I need a way for team members to enter their data variables in a form, and that form to output that data in a way that can be easily integrated into this workflow.
Currently this is done using an excel spreadsheet, which uses vb to output a csv file. I have also looked into building a django web app with a python backend that automatically combines the data entered with the templates. We're big sharepoint users here but no-one has any experience with Nintex forms.
So, I'm trying to understand how a Nintex form will present data entered to backend processes, whether it's in a data format that I can then enter into a workflow or if the Nintes form can directly integrate with something like Python scripting?
Thankyou, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. You've provided a some great food for thought and some much needed direction for my research.
I admit I don't fully understand all aspects of this, but it's good to know there are ways and means of accessing the data created within Nintex/Sharepoint. And this looks like a good opportunity to properly understand and use REST APIs, something I've been meaning to do.
