It is one query to get the user's group from AD
firstly, there maybe something wrong with your AD environment, I've seen this before where the SharePoint install was in a different country to the AD servers. Solution was to get a catalogue server at minimum installed locally. Now this may not be possible.. You could do something like this to mitigate the timeouts Web Service call fail and retry
